Elder Chris Crouse – What We Can Do

Man by nature is often thinking about what he can’t do.  Elder Chris turns to Mark 14:3 to give an account of a woman who broke a box of expensive ointment and applied it to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Many wondered why she “wasted” it rather than selling it and giving to the poor.  But Jesus asked them to leave her alone, that “she hath done what she could”.  Elder Chris describes that the Lord had blessed her and she used the blessing she had to bless the Lord.  In Luke 21 we find a widow woman in poverty that gave all she had even though it was a small amount.  That amount was greater to the Lord than the Pharisees who gave great amounts.  In contrast, there are things that we can’t do.  In Luke 18, the flawed question is asked:  “a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  While he had upheld many of the laws, he had many possessions and would not let them go, falling short.  Those that heard this account pondered how anyone could possibly achieve eternal life and asked Jesus “Who then can be saved? And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”  It is important to recognize there are some things like eternal life that we cannot achieve on our own.  But Elder Chris reminds us of the various blessings we have, the importance of doing what we can, and to use those blessings toward the church and for the praise and glorification of our Lord.
