Elder Ronald Lawrence – Pride and Humility

Elder Ronald bases this sermon on Matthew 21:12.  “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”  He gives many scriptures to prove that we have nothing to exalt ourselves for or to be prideful for; and that being obedient to the Lord is the essence of humility.  To further expand on the distinct differences of pride and humility, he gives the account of Saul of Kish, who started out very small in the world, became big, exalted himself and was destroyed.  In contrast, Saul of Tarsus began very big in the world and became very small in his own sight but was successful.  Elder Ronald describes how Paul’s (as well as all children of God’s) transition from pride to humility begins with an “experience of grace”.  Paul proclaimed “I am what I am by the grace of God.” and “Oh wretched man that I am.”  Paul saw himself as the chief of sinners and Elder Ronald encourages all of us to put aside our number one enemy, ourselves, not to exalt pride, but to exalt the Spirit.
