Elder Chris Crouse – Romans: Paul’s Systematic Theology, Chapter 9, Part 1, Election

After the great climax of the Bible in Romans 8 where Paul proclaims that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God, he changes tone in Romans 9 to sorrow.  He begins to think on his countrymen who have rejected the Son of God and wishes they could see what he has been blessed to see.  God blessed them with 7 great blessings from adoption, to the covenants, to the law and most importantly, Jesus Christ.  Paul goes on to explain that the children of Israel are not all the children of God.  God loved Jacob and hated Esau even though Esau did good things in his life.  It is God’s sovereign right, not based on works, to have compassion on whom he will have compassion and he has elected a people before the foundation of the world.
